A young beggar is found dead. Hours later, another misfortune happens in the town. Shtolman has to unravel a chain of mysterious deaths to save the life of a close person.

The clock is ticking, but the antidote has not yet been found. The stranger plays with Shtolman, planting more and more riddles for him.

At a county ball, landowner Gudkov tells Shtolman a strange story about ghouls. The same night, one of the dead gets up and leaves the morgue, scaring the orderly to death.

All the forces of the Zatonsk police are mobilized to capture the sinister sect operating in the city and its leader.

Countess Gorina does not believe that her brother has committed suicide and demands a re-investigation. Turns out, instead of her brother, another man was buried.

To distract Anna from heavy thoughts, Piotr invites her to take a visit to the estate of the fashionable young artist Solomin. Soon it all ends up in a disaster.

Three naval officers who arrived in Zatonsk for a card game were found dead in an inn room. Korobeynikov asks Anna to help the police one last time.

Shtolman suspects the 3 dead officers could also be involved in the murder in St. Petersburg. Anna has to conclude a deal with the spirit of one of the officers.

The old Duke Meshchersky is killed during a fox hunt in his estate. The police investigation establishes that the shot was not accidental.

The drawing by a student of the school founded by the late duke seems to be related to his death. Anna finally understands the meaning of the visions that have been tormenting her.

The head of an out-of-town ethnographer is found on the site of the former pagan temple. The police have no doubt that it was a ritual murder.

Anna and Scriabin manage to save the dying son of a Cheremis (Mari) family. The boy's mother reads Anna's fortune and warns her against making a wrong decision.

The photographer's wife who recently arrived in the town burns to death in his studio. Another charred corpse is also found at the photographer's studio.

Dr. Milts is unable to identify the bodies of the dead, and Anna is also unable to establish contact with their spirits.

Former prosecutor is killed in a room locked from the inside. Shtolman and Korobeynikov suspect that the murderer is the same one they've been hunting for a long time for.

Diamond dust is found in the stomach of an ex-impresario Rtishchev. It seems that Shtolman and Korobeynikov are about to catch the one whom they have been hunting for a long time.

Having pronounced a sentence on the accused, the judge grabs a revolver and shoots himself right in the courtroom. An antique snuffbox found in his pocket mysteriously disappears.

In a recently burgled jewelry store, the owner is found deceased (by stab wounds). Dr. Milts establishes it as suicide. The jeweler's apprentice reports a mysterious lady visiting the day before.

Viner, an ex-lover of the young poetess is suspected of murdering her, and despite having a strong motive, Viner claims there is a witness who can prove his innocence.

Anna tries to puzzle out the meaning of Olshanskaya's posthumous poems while Korobeynikov has to go to a neighboring village in search of the witness to her murder.
